Humanizing Athletes: UFC Fighter Jessica Andrade’s Favorite Things

UFC Fighter Jessica Andrade (21-8)

MMA fighters are savages. They are the best athletes on planet earth and β€” as human beings β€” have an extraordinarily wide-ranging set of interests. Who are they as people? What makes them tick? What does each athlete have in common with the fans that cheer them on? This series fills in those blanks and gets to the heart of the matter while exploring what makes your favorite fighters who they are.

Jessica “Bate Estaca” Andrade is one of the best fighters on the planet and one of the most dangerous. She is a former strawweight champion and is currently the No. 1 contender in the flyweight division. She also is No. 5 on the UFC women’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Andrade was signed to the UFC in 2013, and after going 7-3 with wins over Raquel Pennington, Jessica Penne, Joanne Calderwood, and Angela Hill, she got her first UFC title fight. At UFC 211 on May 13, 2017, Andrade fought Joanna Jedrzejczyk; however, she would lose a unanimous decision.

After the loss to Jedrzejczyk, Andrade would win three straight, including a brutal knockout of Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 228, which would earn her a second crack at the UFC strawweight title.

At UFC 237, in front of her home country of Brazil, she fought for the strawweight title against Rose Namajunas. At almost the three-minute mark of the second round, Andrade would pick Namajunas up and slam her on her head, knocking her out and winning the title. Incredible stuff.

Andrade would hold the belt for three months and then lose it to Weili Zhang in China. The Brazilian would then fight Rose Namajunas in a rematch at UFC 251 on ‘Fight Island.’ She would lose a very close split decision, ending her career at strawweight.

Andrade would return three months later in her new weight class, flyweight. In her first fight, she would defeat No. 1 ranked Katlyn Chookagian in the first round with a nasty body punch. The win over Chookagian would set her up with another title shot.

Andrade returns to action at UFC 261 against flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko in front of the first sold-out live crowd in over a year. To many, Andrade is the first real challenger Shevchenko has faced since she won the title against Jedrzejczyk in 2018.

When asked what we should expect from her fight against Shevchenko, Andrade said, “You can always expect my best in every fight.”
