Sound of Metal Movie Review

“Sound of Metal”might be the best movie of 2020, and Riz Ahmed gives a powerhouse performance.

“Sound of Metal” is about Ruben, a heavy-metal drummer that is going deaf. The movie is all about the ramifications and his decisions.

Before I gush over Ahmed, director Darius Marder is the other star of the movie. He chooses not to use subtitles when people are talking with sign language because Ruben doesn’t know sign language was a great idea. The way he plays with the sound is terrific. Marder reminds the audience how much sound there really is. He will put a random sound that you haven’t heard in a while, which then makes you think about not being able to hear. You might think that the sound of the wind isn’t important, but when you can’t hear it anymore, it quickly becomes important.

The script and screenplay were written with passion. Marder previously worked on “The Place Beyond the Pines,” which was excellent storytelling.

Ahmed was tremendous. He is one of the gems in Hollywood right now. I haven’t seen many of the Academy Award front runners, but Ahmed has to be on the top of the list for best actors.
Acting as a deaf person must be difficult, but he pulls it off. The way he acts with his eyes is something special; you can feel his emotion, his pain.
Ruben is also a recovering heroin addict, and while he isn’t using heroin, there are other addict traits. IMPULSIVENESS. I won’t spoil some of the decisions made, but there are different ways to fuck your life up to other than using drugs.

I also want to give a shout-out to Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci, who are also very good. The sound editor needs some recognition as well.

The only negative that I have is there were some timeline issues. I did not grasp time, meaning days or maybe weeks in the movie would go by, and it didn’t really me know. That is a real nit-picky issue, but I just had to mention it.

“Sound of Metal” is awesome and is a must-watch. Ahmed puts on a master-class of acting and Marder really introduced himself as a director.
